BREEDING AND GREATER SWISS MOUNTAIN DOGS

We strongly oppose to breeding non-pedigree puppies. For now we are successful in protecting Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs in Slovenia. And if you decide to breed them this should be pedigree breeding, which means that both the dog and the bitch have to complete breed examination successfully.

Furthermore, before you decide on breeding your dog you should test its hips (HD), elbows (ED) and shoulders (OCD). These evaluations are carried out in all the finest veterinary clinics. The minimum age for x-raying joints is 12 months, most recommended is the 18th month. We strongly recommend that you check its eyes as well. We recommend that you check all of the above even if you don’t plan to use the dog for breeding. That’s how you can make sure that you have a healthy dog.

The dog may participate in the breeding check-up in Slovenia when it is 15 months old. When you go to the check-up bring the dog’s documents and x-ray results with you. There the dog receives breeding and physical assessment.

In Slovenia, you can breed male dogs from 15th month of age, and female dogs from 20th month of age to when they are 8 years old.
