Greater
Swiss Mountain Dogs need plenty of exercise, as they are very active
dogs. Their favourite season is winter because it’s cold. This is
also the time when they are especially energetic.
We have
to pay special attention to puppies and their movement. Dysplasia and
other joint diseases (eg. HD, ED, SD, OCD) present the biggest
problems of large fast-growing breeds. Therefore, we should not
exaggerate with walks with puppies younger than 14 months. Young dogs
up to 14 months of age shouldn’t walk in the hills or mountains
(whether that being uphill or downhill), they should use the stairs as
little as possible (five steps per day is not a problem), and they
shouldn’t run along bicycles, rollerblades, skis, sledges nor should
they jump... They should walk on flat surfaces. We mustn’t throw
them balls or toys, because quick stops over-strain the joints. We
also need to be careful when they play with other dogs. We must be
aware of the fact that though the six months old dog looks like a big
dog already, it is still a puppy. However, when the dog reaches 14
months it can already do all the above mentioned activities.
