For Greater Swiss
Mountain Dogs is advisable to have 2 meals per day, one in the morning
and one in the evening. Thus, their recommended daily ration is
divided into two parts and their stomach is never too full. We have to
be careful that it doesn’t come to the stomach rotation. Therefore,
one hour before and after meals the dog shouldn’t run or jump
wildly. The worst thing we could do in terms of stomach rotation is to
feed the dog immediately after or before the walk. Stressful events
(dog shows, driving in a car, breeding, etc.) should be treated the
same way as the walks. Dogs before and after feeding mustn’t get too
excited – they have to calm down. Thus, the risk of stomach rotation
reduces significantly.
Our dogs usually
eat dry dog food (kibble), but often also cooked food. We use
high-quality briquettes brands Purina Proplan or BiOMill.
When buying dog
food we need to ensure that it doesn’t contain more than 1 % of
calcium. Excessive doses of calcium can cause an OCD disease! It’s
advisable for the food to contain glucosamine and chondroitin
supplements for joint restoration.
Dogs (especially
young dogs up to 14 months of age) should not be given any additional
vitamins or extra calcium. A dog gets a sufficient amount of
substances needed for its normal development from high-quality kibble.
